North East Veterans
We had only a small group of players travel to Mansfield last Monday and from all reports, the scoring was tough. Jim Martin playing in his first vets won a ball, well done Jim.
Next veterans is at Bright on the 27th February.
Ladies Comp
Last Tuesday, 25 members played (fantastic field) and Peter Stewart enjoyed playing with the ladies with a brilliant 44 points (should have saved this score for the Rigoni Shield), runner up Marg Curtis on 36 points on a countback from Ann Hazeldine.
The nine-hole competition was a repeat of last week’s results, Robyn Ternes won with 16 points on a countback from Penny Dawkins, Marg Fitridge also hit 16 points.
Yesterday 22 Ladies played, winner of the 18 hole comp. was Marg Curtis with a great net 72, runner Judy Bynon, net 73
Winner of the 9 hole comp with a net 36 was Suzette Kelly, runner up, 9 hole Champ. Robyn Ternes with a net 37, well done ladies.
Just a reminder Ladies of your opening day next Tuesday, sounds like a fun day with a 12 hole Ambrose.
Membership
As the membership numbers are finalized for this year, it is sad to report that we have lost two valuable members, both for personal and health reasons.
Alan Rockliff (Rockie) after 30 years as a member, served on the Committee, is a big loss to the Club, a very popular member and we all admired his easy-going golf swing. He was always willing to donate his machinery and time to the Club.
Craig Shewell also a popular member, played recently in the successful pennant finals. Craig’s job was to clean the bins on the course and he did that well.
We wish Rockie and Senior all the best and our doors are always open for their return.
Council Masterplan
Yesterday John Costello and I met with the Alpine Shire as they are developing a sports and recreation masterplan for the Shire.
This is our opportunity to give the Shire our wish list for the future and once the Shire adopts the masterplan, it is then that all future projects will have a priority and they will assist Clubs in arranging grants to meet the costs of the project.
On our list – 1 Upgrading our irrigation system.
2. Upgrading our drainage system.
3. Upgrading our Clubhouse – disability access, toilets, office
4. Upgrading our cart shed and parking.
5. Develop a driving range.
6. encourage more youth to play golf.
7. Upgrading our tees and pathways.
Opening Day of NEDGA
Opening Day of the Northeast Golf Association will be held at Myrtleford next Sunday 12th February. It is a 2-player aggregate Stableford. As the host club, we need good numbers to play also we will provide lunch and run the bar. Please enter via the attach entry form.
Course
Thanks to Spider who has made a start on cleaning up the tee markers.
Our next BIG working bee is the 20th February, 9.00am. A contractor has been engaged to prune the large gum tree on the 10th green and remove branches on the 6th. We need trailers and chain saws. Thanks to Judy and Buggsie, logs will be put in their paddock for sale and we will take the head of the tree down to burn off area.
Yesterday afternoon our Clubhouse was a buzz. Many ladies had a tremendous working bee cleaning up the garden around the house, thank you very much, looks terrific.
In the middle of that activity, Spider arrived with bar delivery, thank you Spider.
Also someone was interested in hiring out the clubhouse, thanks Judy.
Deric Taylor
It was sad to learn this week of the passing of Deric. A member of the famous 1970 Premiership Football team, from all reports I have heard that Deric and Pat Quick were legends of our Club. The tree on the right of the seventeen fairway is called “Dexter’s Tree”, maybe a sign on the tree remembering the legend Deric Taylor.
Inside Golf
The golf magazine Inside Golf has contacted the Club re doing a story on our Club and course. The reporter recently played on our beautiful course and was impressed.
Alpine Classic
The 20th Alpine Classic to be held on the 20th,21st and 23th March.
We are approaching 140 entries so far, if you wish to play, go to the Myrtleford Golf Club website and follow the Alpine Classic tab.
If you wish only to play at Myrtleford course, please register after February 16th.
John and Sue Wilson Golf Weekend 4-5th February
Sponsored by the Savoy Club, a great weekend of golf, tomorrow and Sunday, and I urge all members to support both events. There will be a Stableford event tomorrow and a two player Ambrose on the Sunday – Mens, Ladies and Mixed (subject to sufficient entries). Please put your name on the list on the noticeboard.
Thanks to a few members, the lunch on Sunday sounds superb.
.
Good hitting,
George
